Biology

My name is Steph, and I have 19 years experience of teaching Key Stage 3, GCSE/iGCSE and A level Biology. I am a current teacher of Biology at an online school, as well as a tutor of Biology.
During my career, I have been an examiner for several different exam boards, and am a current examiner for AQA. I am very knowledgeable in what examiners are looking for in student responses and teach my tutees how to decipher and respond to board specific exam questions.
I believe in fostering a supportive and inclusive classroom where curiosity is encouraged. My philosophy of education centres on making learning relevant, engaging, and accessible, helping students not only achieve academic success but also develop confidence and independence.
For students preparing for GCSE/iGCSE and A levels, I use a number of exam questions in each session to help prepare students. Many students have good knowledge of content, but struggles to apply this to unfamiliar scenarios, and this is something I guide students with.

Chemistry

Hi, my name is Sandra and I have over 30 years of teaching experience and I am passionate about working with young learners. I am able to deliver a one-on-one service focused on learning and developing skills for both GCSE and A level Chemistry.
As a senior examiner for Edexcel I participate in the development of mark schemes for A level Chemistry. This gives me a real insight into exactly what exam boards are requiring students to do to demonstrate their understanding of a topic. I have also been involved in producing resources for underachieving students for exam boards.
I try to make complex concepts clear and engaging and I focus on how to tackle exam questions, tailoring each lesson to the individual students learning style and academic goals. I provide patient guidance, clear explanations, and targeted practice focussing on exam questions. Many students struggle with the unstructured longer style questions, and I am able to work through these identifying what the question is actually asking and how to formulate a good answer. I encourage students to avoid too much rote learning and to really develop their understanding. This gives them the skills needed to tackle any question thrown at them in the final exams.

Testimonials

Chemistry

My name is Sindhu, and I am a current A level Chemistry teacher with 11 years of experience. I also work as an examiner for OCR and Edexcel, giving me a strong understanding of how different exam boards assess students and what examiners expect to see in their answers.
I use this experience to help students interpret command words, recognise the demands of each question and apply their knowledge to unfamiliar situations. I show students how to break down complex calculations and longer questions into smaller, manageable steps. For extended-response questions, I model how to plan, structure and develop answers that are scientifically accurate, relevant and clearly written.
My teaching approach is supportive, positive and adapted to the needs of each student. I use cognitive learning strategies such as retrieval practice, spaced revision, visual explanations and step-by-step modelling to help students understand difficult concepts and remember them more effectively. During online lessons, I use interactive whiteboards, shared documents, diagrams, live worked examples and targeted questioning to keep students involved and check their understanding throughout the session.
Exam questions are included regularly so that students learn how to turn their subject knowledge into effective answers. I also provide focused support with practical-based questions, including experimental methods, variables, observations, data analysis, calculations, uncertainties and evaluation. My aim is to help students improve their results while also developing the confidence and independence needed to approach Chemistry successfully.'

TestimonialsSindhu is succinct and clear in the way she teaches, she writes great notes and knows the specification well. She is always supportive!

I really like how Sindhu teaches, she makes sure you understand the content and is willing to explain things many times until you feel confident.

Physics

My name is Martin and I have 18 years of teaching experience. My subjects include GCSE/iGCSE and A-levels in mathematics and physics. I have experience with the following examination boards; AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, and CAIE. I routinely set homework assignments after each session in order to make sure learning is reinforced.
A recent trend with all examination boards has been to set questions with unfamiliar contexts, particularly in physics. Therefore I believe it’s important to prepare students for this. Another aspect I focus on is how best to answer “describe” and “explain” exam questions in which students frequently lose marks. These often require a full appreciation of the underlying principles, not simply choosing a formula from the data sheet.
